Hugh Chappell

Hugh Edwin Chappell, formerly of Terrell and lately of Rusk, passed away into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Feb. 2, 2024. Hugh was born June 9, 1951 in Dallas to Albert and Margaret (Propps) Chappell, both of whom also joyfully welcomed him into Heaven. Hugh was a servant at heart and when he was 8 years old at a church camp, he gladly surrendered his everything to serving Jesus in any way he could. Hugh’s life was a living testimony of the Parable of the Talents (in Matthew 25:14-23) where in all that the Lord blessed him with, Hugh was able to grow it for God's Kingdom and His glory. He was a kind man with infinite patience as he helped others with both spiritual and material needs. His giving nature was never for others to recognize—Hugh only wanted to be in obedience to the Lord as he humbly, and generously, gave of all his resources. Hugh was like a modern-day Barnabas as he sought to make sure that others heard the Gospel along with his financial contributions to missions, missionaries and outreaches that assisted COUNTLESS others as they came to know Christ. While many of Hugh’s contributions may be known only to God, his legacy of generosity will no doubt be felt for many years through future generations. His immense faith and love for others made every interaction with Hugh a positive one and his smile was as bright as the sun on a Texas summer day. He was a member of Covenant Church of East Texas where he was active in many ministries. A man who exemplified obedience, love and a life of giving, Hugh will always be remembered as a true disciple that always made sure others saw the very love of Jesus to them, through him. Hugh is survived by his cousins: Nancy James and husband, Wayne, of Texarkana, Warren Chappell and wife, Chrissy, of Pearland, and Kimberly Glidden and husband, David of Texarkana. His legacy will also be proudly carried on by his adopted children, Julio Torres and wife, Maria along with their children, Julio Torres, Jr. and Julissa Torres along with his church families and many friends, each of whom will always treasure the wonderful memories of Hugh. Funeral service will be 4:00pm, Friday, Feb. 9, 2024 at Max Slayton Funeral Chapel with a visitation beginning at 3:00pm to service time. The family asks that, in honor of Hugh’s selfless giving, memorials be made to The Covenant Church of East Texas at www.ccoet.org.
