J. Carmon "Sandy" Cowart

J. Carmon “Sandy” Cowart, longtime and well-known resident of Terrell, passed away peacefully on Jan. 22, 2024 with family at his side. All his life, Sandy took great comfort in all of Scripture and now his family takes the greatest comfort knowing that “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” as it says in 2 Cor. 5:8 and Sandy is experiencing the greatest joy in finally seeing his Savior, whom he loved so much, face to face. Sandy was born Jan. 24, 1936 in Parks, Texas to Raymond and Geniece (Dobbins) Cowart, both of whom greeted him in Heaven along with his beloved wife, JoAnn Cowart, his son, Ronald H. Cowart, sister, Robbie J. McGaughey, brother, Keith Cowart and sister, Jerrie Boutwell. Sandy grew up in Wesson, Mississippi where both of his parents taught at Co-Lin Community College. As a young man, he and his siblings had a “passport” to the entire campus and were seen frequently at many the college activities where they enjoyed being a part of campus life, even getting the chance (although they were younger than the band members) to play alongside the Co-Liin Community College Wolfpack Band. The Cowarts had a beloved dog, Snisch, that also accompanied Sandy everywhere on the grounds and Snisch became an “unofficial mascot” at games with Sandy’s mom sewing him a little matching uniform! Later, Sandy attended the University of Mississippi “Ole Miss” Pharmacy School where he began his education that would cement Sandy’s contribution to helping others for the rest of his life. As a student at Ole Miss, Sandy would also develop a devotion to his alma mater that would always be a conversation point, a destination (for family visits and GAMES!) as well as something he would share with his own children when he would take them back to visit all the places and share all the memories of how he grew up to be the man he would become. In June of 1958, he married his best friend, JoAnn Hennington, and in 1968 they moved to Terrell where Sandy continued his calling of serving others by being a pharmacist at his own pharmacy, Terrell Pharmacy. For almost 5 decades, Sandy would be the Terrell community’s ‘go to’ pharmacist and he helped with every question, every concern and every need. Although a part of him was always in Mississippi, Sandy had a heart as big as Texas and there are countless stories, many of which are known to others and even more known only to God about how Sandy assisted with medications for families in need as well as basic needs for innumerable community members. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Terrell where he served faithfully as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for 60 years. In addition to his church membership, Sandy was a dedicated member of the Gideons International chapter in Kaufman County and while he recognized that people needed medicines for physical healing, he was the first to let anyone and everyone know about the Great Healer and how his saving grace was available to all who simply asked for it. Sandy also had a strong devotion to Terrell and he was an active member of the Rotary Club for many years making many community events memorable for attendees. He was also voted to the TISD School board for 29 years, serving from 1985 to 2004 and was a longtime member of the Terrell Chamber of Commerce, serving as the President. A true man of God who always placed others before himself, Sandy will be greatly missed and never forgotten by his family, his friends and the entire town of Terrell. Those left to cherish the many memories of Sandy are his daughters: Tami Jo Brooks and husband, Carlton, of Canton, Tracey Ann Crowsey and husband, Bill, of Terrell, Tara Lyn Duty and husband, Stokes, of Canton; grandchildren: Chase Harrison Cowart, Elizabeth (Liz) Brooks Thetford and husband, Taylor, Evan Joseph Brooks, wife Jordan, Nathaniel Jacob Crowsey and wife, Crystal, Jordan David Crowsey and wife, Dominique, Dylan Ryan Crowsey, Jackson Stokes Duty, Logan Ryan Duty and Dawson Michael Duty; great grandchildren: Harrison Shane Thetford, Quinn Joseph Thetford, Tyson Jacob Crowsey, Heidi Rose Crowsey, Brady Neal Crowsey, Elijah Jordan Crowsey, Isabelle Grace Crowsey and Chance Cowart as well as many other extended family members, church family and a host of friends. Funeral service will be at 11:00am, Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Terrell with interment to follow at College Mound Cemetery where he will be laid to rest next to his precious JoAnn.
