Joe Chandler

Joel “Joe” Albert Chandler, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away September 5, 2018 in Quinlan, Texas. Joe was born May 25, 1960 in Terrell to Glen Joe and Nellie Ruth (Harris) Chandler. He was welcomed into Heaven by his parents, his sister, Leah York and his beloved son, Jacob Chandler. Joe grew up in the Terrell area and attended Terrell High School. He went to work at Howmet (later Vistawall and now Oldcastle) where his attention to detail established his reputation as the man to “go to” if there was a solution needed for any task. Joe believed in giving back to the communities he loved and he served as Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 391 in Terrell for many years where he was a mentor and supporter of young men and their parents in learning important life skills that are still remembered today. Recently, Joe was privileged to serve as Assistant Scout Master with Troop 381 in Wills Point where, again, his ability to positively impact young lives is a legacy that will never be forgotten. Joe was also involved again with Troop 391 as the troop began to recharter this fall. For anyone that knew Joe, it was evident that he had a deep love for Scouting and he gave so much to scouts, families and other troops in the Texas Skies District (formerly Cherokee District). In every meeting and with every person, Joe made their lives better. He set an example of leadership, accountability and kindness that enabled so many others to achieve and surpass their own goals for success. He never met a stranger and his easygoing personality was readily seen by all who met him. His often-repeated phrase was “Leave my stuff alone” but it was all bark and no bite in that Joe will always be remembered for his endless service to others before himself. Joe leaves to celebrate his memory his cherished wife of 40 years, Lettie Chandler; daughter, Tammy Lehman; son Glen Chandler; grandchildren: Megan and Nolan Lehman and Aubree Chandler; sisters: Diann Chandler Marical and husband Al, Karen Chandler and Jose Dorado; daughter-in-law, Shirley Chandler; his best friend who never left his side and whom Joe considered his brother, Joe Mayhew; numerous nieces and nephews as well as extended family and friends who loved him and will miss him dearly. Funeral service for Joe will be 2:00 pm Wednesday September 12, 2018 at Max Slayton Funerals and Cremations. Family will receive friends 6 pm to 8 pm Tuesday September 11 at Max Slayton Funerals and Cremations. In honor of Joe’s love for scouting, memorials may be made in support of Pack 391 rechartering to FUMC-Terrell, 503 W. College, Terrell, TX,75160 with Troop 391 mentioned on the contribution. Scout Oath: On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. Volunteer to help others without expecting a reward. FRIENDLY. Be a friend to everyone, even people who are very different from you. COURTEOUS. Be polite to everyone and always use good manners. KIND. Treat others as you want to be treated . Never harm or kill any living thing without good reason. OBEDIENT. Follow the rules of your family, school, and pack. Obey the laws of your community and country. CHEERFUL. Look for the bright side of life. Cheerfully do tasks that come your way. Try to help others be happy. THRIFTY. Work to pay your own way. Try not to be wasteful. Use time, food, supplies, and natural resources wisely. BRAVE. Face difficult situations even when you feel afraid. Do what you think is right despite what others might be doing or saying. CLEAN. Keep your body and mind fit . Help keep your home and community clean. REVERENT. Be reverent toward God. Be faithful in your religious duties. Respect the beliefs of others.
