Don Maddin

Don Earl Maddin, lately of Forney, TX, passed away August 21, 2023 at his home with beloved family at his side. Don was born November 25, 1929 in Vernon, Texas to Alma and Earl Maddin. He graduated from Vernon High School in 1948 and attended Howard Payne College from 1949-1950. He then worked for United Super Market in Vernon, TX , and continued in the grocery business for 40 years. Don was a 2nd Lieutenant in the National Guard and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1961. Don married Jo Lynn Maddin in Childress, TX, on Feb. 28, 1959. They moved to Hale Center, where he became a partner in a grocery store. He later bought and managed grocery stores in Hale Center, Abernathy, Petersburg, Spur, Olton, and Childress. Don served on the board for Affiliated Foods of Amarillo, TX, for five years. He worked for Adams Extracts for 25 years before retiring having been named Salesman of the Year. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, Lion’s Club, Gideons, and First Baptist Church in Hale Center where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for 50 years. In 2012, Don and Jo Lynn moved to Forney where he continued to serve as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church Forney. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles Maddin, and his sister, Anita Maddin Edwards. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jo Lynn Maddin; his daughters, Kelley Clay and her husband Randy, Karrie Pharris and her husband Greg; grandchildren: Kaleb Clay and his wife Michelle, Josh Clay, Daniel Clay and his wife Lauren, Micah Clay and his wife Kim, Ragan Pharris and her fiancé Joel Warren, and Reed Pharris; great grandchildren: Kendall, Kennedy, Avery, Noah, Smith, Henry, Penny, Hudson, and Madelynn. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Jo Maddin of Wichita Falls, and sisters-in-law: Dorothy Maddin, Genie Henderson and husband Bill Henderson, as well as several nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends. Funeral service will be at 2:00pm, Friday, August 25, 2023 at First Baptist Church in Forney with interment to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
