Dorothy (Leola) Smith

Dorothy Leola Smith, of Terrell, passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Dec. 23, 2024. Leola was born March 17, 1955, in Terrell to Earl and Ernestine Toland, both of whom welcomed her into Heaven along with her sisters, Helen and Wanda and her brothers, Ernest, and Roger. Leola was a lifelong and recognizable resident of the Elmo and Terrell communities where her bright personality and her ever-present smile made sure that others could see the joy she always felt. She was a devoted wife and mother with a never-ending amount of patience for her family. On August 31, 1973, she married her best friend, Harmon, and together they were blessed to have two wonderful children, Deanna and Jason. Leola was a born caregiver and her heart and generosity in serving others was a direct reflection of her love for her Savior, Jesus, and her dedication to the churches she was a member of was widely known. She was an active and faithful member of Bible Baptist Church for many years and then a longtime member of Victory Baptist Church in Terrell. She served in any capacity she felt led by the Holy Spirit, including in the church offices as secretary and in worship ministry where she loved praising the Lord! Her constant love for others and faith in Him was a firm foundation for Leona’s life and this legacy of love will be proudly carried on by the current and future generations that began, in love, with her and Harmon. Her memory will continue to be celebrated by those who loved her including her husband, Harmon Smith of Terrell; daughter, Deanna Ledbetter and husband, Jeremy, of Terrell; son, Jason Smith and wife, Marci, of Midlothian; grandchildren: Matt Ledbetter, Kylee Smith, Taylor Smith, Maddox Smith and Henley Smith; brother, John Toland and wife, Toni, of Decatur, Ill., and many other nieces, nephews, other extended family, beloved church family and many friends. Funeral service will be at 11:00am, Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024, at Victory Baptist Church in Terrell with family receiving friends beginning at 10:00am to service time. Interment will follow her funeral service at Elmo Cemetery.
