Phillip McBride

Phillip Ray McBride passed away on Aug. 16, 2024 with his loving family by his side. Phil was born April 9, 1950 in Gladewater, TX to Edward McBride and Jessie McBride Jetton and he was later blessed to have his step-father, Johnny Jetton, in his life. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father along with his grandparents: Joseph and Hattie Gilbert and Luther and Mary McBride; siblings: Larry McBride and Terry Jetton; sister-in-law, Wanda McBride; son, Joshua Armstrong and brother-in-law, Ricky Rice. Phil was a one of a kind and his unique sense of humor was a reflection of his wit, his sarcasm and his playfulness. Whether you were family or a friend, everyone was the recipient of Phil’s ability to playfully tease, especially if you were his kids or grandkids. Phil truly enjoyed get togethers and would inevitably let the youngsters know that they would be “paying for everything”, all the while laughing. He was a man of solid beliefs and always a straight shooter and, to Phil, there was only black or white, never a gray area. Tough skin was needed around Phil because he called it like he saw it and, many times, he called verbal BS (one of his favorite words!) on any occurrence that just didn’t add up! He loved to play little practical jokes on the ones he loved and kidding them with pretend scenarios. He used humor as a way of connecting and keeping up a cheerful composure and this humor helped when his mom was diagnosed with dementia. He would lightheartedly tell her that he was one of the doctors or the bus driver, making her laugh at his liveliness. Phil was also a devoted father and coached his sons in many sports with baseball being his favorite. Many games were started with the boys touching either first or third base, getting ‘their mind set and ready for the game’. His intensity was well known and while he expected great things from his own boys, he also expected 100% commitment from each player he coached. Phil coached decisively but his big heart for his players enabled him to be a mentor to them, helping each one of them recognize their own potential in any sport AND in life. An electrician by trade, Phil worked for Dallas ISD on several campuses with installation of fire security system panels. His ability to ensure safety for students and staff did not carry over as Phil wasn’t really the best handyman on DIY/repair projects at home! Several attempts were started with the ending being in a local ER where Phil was once again reminded that his talent at fixing things was best left to his day job. A man whose word was his bond and who lived life based on honor, integrity and respect, Phil will be missed by his family, his friends and all whose lives he impacted with his humor, his steadfastness and his love. He is survived by his wife, Susan McBride; children: Colin McBride (Dixie), Brian McBride, (Ashley), Dustin McBride (Lori), Stacy Warren (Sarge) and Emily McBride; grandchildren: Brittani, Nikki, Lindsey, Haley, Megan, Madison, Easton, Reese, Jarik, Brawner, Brantley, and Sabrina; great grandchildren: Paisley, Mason, Hayden, Amari, Case and Owen; brother, Jeff Jetton (Sandie); sisters-in-law: Vicky Rodriguez and husband, Lupe, and Nancy Jetton as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family, each of whom are left to carry on Phil’s legacy. Funeral service will be held 1:00 pm Wednesday August 21, 2024 at Max Slayton Funeral Chapel with interment to follow at Oakland Memorial Park. His family will receive friends beginning at 12:00pm, to service time.
