Jerry Wayne Yates, of Terrell, passed away on May 28, 2021 in Dallas after a long and valiant fight with Covid-19. Jerry was born May 5, 1945 in Dallas to Hugh and Velma (Jerden) Yates, both of whom preceded him in death along with sister, Joy Marlene, and brothers: Luther Johnson, William Yates and Joe Bob Yates. Jerry graduated from Bryan Adams High School in 1963 and on August 25, 1967, he married the love of his life, Vivian Phelps, at Lakeside Baptist Church. He entered the military through enlistment in the US Army where he served honorably until his retirement after 20 years. After retiring, Jerry worked for the VA hospital helping and guiding fellow veterans and their families to excellent medical care. He then worked for Lakes Regional in Terrell and still providing kind and compassionate care for many patients and their families. Jerry also served on the Planning and Zoning Board for Terrell where he played a part in the many new and innovative opportunities that have come to this community. He was a loving husband and doting father who was a friend to so many and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Jerry is survived by his wife, Vivian Yates, of Terrell; son, Lance Yates; grandchildren: Kara, Brayden and Alex Yates; and brother, Donald Johnson as well as nieces, nephews and many friends. Graveside service will be at 3:00pm, Friday, June 4, 2021 at Hillcrest Cemetery 401 W. Broad St. Forney, Tx 75126 with military honors. The family will receive friends 5-7pm, Thursday, June 3, at Max Slayton Funerals and Cremations.
