November 30, 1948 - November 15, 2021
Mike Meeks, lifelong Terrell resident, passed away Monday, November 15, 2021, at his home. He was born November 30, 1948 in Terrell, Texas to Michael Donald Meeks and Juanita Jordan Pirtle, both whom preceded him in death. Mike spent his entire life serving his country and community. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October of 1967 and was then deployed to the Texas National Guard Army. Mike received his Fireman certification and became a Driver Engineer for the Terrell Fire Dept. where he served this growing community until his retirement in 1999. Mike was never far from his call to help others so after retiring from the City of Terrell, he began working with Kaufman County as a Deputy Fire Marshal where he ‘retired’ (again) in 2006. During his long tenure with the City of Terrell and Kaufman County, Mike also selflessly served for over 40 years on the Terrell Volunteer Fire Dept, where his incredible knowledge and experience was an vital part in successfully saving lives and property in the rural areas. Mike answered the call to also protect when he served as a Reserve Officer with the Terrell Police Department for many years. He was a Master Mason and a member of both Artesia Lodge No. 406 and Prairieville Lodge No. 253, working alongside his masonic members to improve the community Mike loved so much. He was also a member of First Christian Church in Terrell. As proud as Mike was of serving his hometown, he was especially proud to help with the Boy Scouts spending years with Boy Scout Troop 390 as Scout Leader and Assistant Scout Master. Mike’s devotion to teaching the foundations of being a good Scout earned him the prestigious honor of being named a Vigil Member Order of the Arrow, a “high mark of distinction and recognition for arrowmen who, by the reason of exceptional service and unselfish interest, have made distinguished contributions beyond the immediate responsibilities of their position” and only bestowed on the Scout Leaders who embodied service and honesty as Mike did. Mike is survived by his wife Debbie Meeks of Terrell (whom he married on December 31, 1991 at Terrell Fire Station #2 fittingly enough!); daughter Toni Woodall and husband Cody, sons, Dustin Dean and Kina Miller and David Dean; grandchildren: Kylie Lisenby, Kayden Mitte, Tyler, Caleb and Nathan Swift; sisters, Luann Willis, Tricia Selman and husband Richard; brother, Buck Pirtle and wife, Tina, as well as numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and a host of friends. A celebration of Life for Mike will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Max Slayton Funeral Chapel with family receiving friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. He will be inurned at D/FW National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family strongly suggests that donations be made in memory of Mike to: Terrell Volunteer Fire Dept. P.O. Box 2071 Terrell, Tx 75160 or Boy Scout Troop 390 405 N. Adelaide St. Terrell, Tx 75160.
