    Richard Sonntag

    September 6, 1943 - October 18, 2020

    Richard Ray Sonntag, 77, passed away October 18, 2020 into the presence of his Lord and Savior. Richard was born September 6, 1943 to Francis and Emma (Windt) Sonntag, both of whom preceded him in death. Richard was also met in Heaven by his sister, Frances Mitchell and her husband, Billy. Richard was a United States Army Veteran where he served 6 years with distinction, fighting in Vietnam, and earning many prestigious medal and awards. After his discharge from the military, Richard went on to work at the US Postal Service as a window clerk for over 30 years before his retirement. In May 1963, Richard married the love of his life and best friend, Helen Slayton in Terrell. Together he and Helen went on to make memories and create a beautiful life with a wonderful family. Richard was a member of Trinity Life Baptist Church where he was active and made many friends. Richard is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Helen Sonntag of Mesquite; daughter, Juanita Janell Poteet and her husband, James of Spooner, WI; grandson, Steven Andrew Poteet and wife, Janelle of Ashland, MA as well as several friends and extended family who will continue to cherish the memory Richard has left behind. A celebration of his life will be at 10:15am, Friday, November 13, 2020 at Dallas/Ft. Worth National Cemetery with military honors.
