Betty Oberg

Betty Marteil Mayo (Westbrook/Oberg) was born on July 16th, 1939, to Robert Cecil Mayo and Viola Marie Martin, in Pauls Valley, OK. Betty grew up in Pauls Valley, graduating from Pauls Valley High School in 1957, then continuing her education at East Central State College (East Central University), receiving her Bachelor of Science in Education. Betty was an educator from an early age, “teaching” her dolls, pets and sisters at home, and later being assigned by her Jackson Elementary School Principal to lead classes for the younger age groups when their teachers were out of the classroom. Her journey as a professional educator in Texas included stops in Perryton, Johnson City, and Terrell. Betty was a talented educator, a “Master Teacher”, touching the lives of thousands of students during her distinguished career. Betty was an avid reader, and a lifetime learner. She was a student of life. Betty was a talented artist; her home is filled with her work. She was a prolific writer, penning novels, short stories, children’s books, poetry, and greeting cards. The daughter of a builder, her many sketches of home plan ideas are scattered throughout her office. She loved to travel, enjoying her many trips, often road trips, across the country and beyond. One of her favorite entertainment destinations was “The Casino”, which she enjoyed with her family and friends. Betty was married to Orville Westbrook, producing her son, Monty Westbrook (wife Mary Jandrew). She was an extraordinary mother and mother-in-law, and a special mentor to the Terrell High School Class of 1982. Betty shared her life with her brother and sisters, Bobby Mayo (wife Diana), Ruth Hines (husband Jerry), and Doris Hines (husband Tommy). She loved and was loved by her extended family; her grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great grand-dogs, and of course, her cats. Betty will be remembered for many things, and her impact on the lives of her family, friends, colleagues, and students will endure. Betty passed away on January 11th, 2026.
