George Eliot Jones Jr.

George E. Jones, Jr., longtime resident of Terrell, passed away peacefully into the presence of his Savior on the morning of December 20, 2017 with his family at his side. George was born May 15, 1935 in McComb, Miss. to Dr. G. Eliot Jones, Sr. and Mildred Clara (Causey) Jones both of whom preceded him in death. George was a strong student academically growing up and he had a love for learning that lasted his entire life. He graduated Hazelhurst High School in 1953 and then attended Samford University in Birmingham, AL where he received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Studies. In 1961, he bought his first pharmacy, City Pharmacy, in Grand Saline where he honed his skill in making sure every customer that visited his pharmacy left knowing they were well taken care of. In 1966, he bought Buford Drug in Terrell and he owned and operated it for 33 years continuing to exceed the expectations of professionalism to the community he came to love so much. George had a perfect personality to be a pharmacist in a small town: wit, a remarkable memory for names of his customers and their families and an incredibly dependable and trustworthy character. He knew how to keep visitors and customers laughing with his great sense of humor and insightful observations in life making visits to the drugstore a trip to enjoy! In 1998, he passed the reigns of the pharmacy to Eckerd’s Drug and George retired to spend more time with his beloved wife, Elizabeth, and their children and new grandchildren. He was a strong and staunch supporter of Terrell education, athletics, drill team and other extra-curricular activities. George recognized that to give back to the community that he felt so blessed to be a part of was an integral part of the responsibility of living and working here in Terrell. He and Elizabeth were faithful and active members of First United Methodist Church in Terrell where they loved to serve the Lord, and their church, at every opportunity. George leaves a heritage of humble service mirroring our Lord stated in Matthew 22:37-39---‘Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 'This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' ---a legacy his family will carry forward for generations to come. George leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Elizabeth Ann Jones; children: Kathryn Marie Martinez and partner, Dr. Joe Monk of Dallas, G. Eliot Jones of Terrell, Judy Elizabeth Poe and husband, Jon, of Pottsboro, TX; grandchildren: Jon Wayne, Peter Blake and Kate Elizabeth as well as other extended family, his church family and communities that loved him and will miss him dearly. Funeral service will be at 11:00am, Saturday, December 23, 2017 at First United Methodist Church with interment to follow at College Mound Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-8pm, Friday, Dec. 22, at Max Slayton Funerals and Cremations.
