James Carter

James Olin Carter, 84, of Terrell, Texas, passed away peacefully March 6, 2026. He was born in Ehrhardt, South Carolina, on April 16, 1941, to Charlie and Della Carter, as the 18th of 23 children. After graduating from high school in 1959, James moved to Dallas, Texas, where he began his working life with Tom Thumb and later with American Bakeries. In the 1980s, he began what would become a lifelong career in the trucking industry, lasting 33 years. Over the years, he worked for Sundance, Whitfield, PIE, Ryder/PIE, and later Nations Way, before retiring. Throughout his career, he was a proud member of Teamsters Local 745. James was a man of deep faith, strong values, and a tireless work ethic. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing, but above all else, gardening and farming were in his blood. He took great pride in growing things from the ground and working with his hands. He was also a proud Mason and had the great honor of serving as Master of the Lodge, an accomplishment that meant a great deal to him. His faith was an important part of his life, and he was especially proud to serve as a Deacon in his church. Above all, James loved his Lord, his family, and his country. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who treasured every moment spent with those he loved. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret Ann Carter; his son, Torrey Carter and wife Tamie; and his daughter, Tina Carter. He also leaves behind his cherished granddaughters, Tabbitha Cress and husband Nick, and Megan Etheridge. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Lana, Jaygan, Harley, Brighton, Jaxen, Wade, and Wyatt. James is also survived by his siblings Floyd Carter and wife Barbara, Wayne Garris and wife Linda, Laura Isgitt and husband Reggie, and Racheal Stinson and husband Roy, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Della; his brothers Marvin, Gearl, Bill, Harry, Ray, Warren, Walter, St. Clair, Miles, Thomas, Ralph, John, and Hallman; and his sisters Mabel, Chessie, Hattie Elizabeth, Carolyn, Barbara, Emma Ellen, and Mary. James will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever. A Celebration of James’ life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 28, 2026 at the Meadowbrook Missionary Baptist Church in Wills Point. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
