Michael Shane "Superman" Gray

Michael Shane Gray, loving husband, father, Papa, brother, uncle and friend, went home to be with the Lord and was reunited with his beloved family members in Heaven. Known as “Superman” because of his incredible devotion to his family and friends, Michael Shane was born on May 6, 1977, the cherished son of Rex and Carolyn Gray. Michael Shane was joyfully welcomed into Heaven by his Lord and Savior; his parents, Rex Gray, Sr. and Carolyn Lung; his beloved big brother, Rex Gray, Jr. (“Bubba”); and his nephew, Aaron Lindsey. Shane grew up in Oak Cliff, and even as a young man, the generous, funny and larger-than-life spirit that would define him was already evident. Growing up alongside six siblings taught him the importance of family and created a bond between his brothers and sisters that could never be broken. To his siblings, Shane truly was the best brother in the world. He loved them fiercely, stood by them, made them laugh and made sure they always knew how much they meant to him. The bond they shared was more than that of brothers and sisters—they were lifelong best friends, and losing Shane leaves a place in their hearts that can never be filled. Shane was always the person who made sure everyone was having a good time. His sense of humor was second to none, and every gathering became a little more fun the moment he walked through the door. He was a natural storyteller with a wonderful way of bringing a story to life, and anyone who knew Shane knew one of his favorite sayings: “Cool-Cool - Dig it- Dig it!” His humor was matched only by the size of his heart. Shane loved everyone fiercely. When he loved you, he loved you with his whole heart. He made sure no one went without and would do anything he could for the people around him. Whether you were family, a lifelong friend or someone he had just met, if Shane had something you needed, he would give it to you. He truly would give someone the shirt off his own back. That extraordinary generosity, selfless love and fierce devotion to others earned him the name “Superman.” Shane proudly served his country in the United States Navy, another reflection of the servant’s heart he carried throughout his life. Of all the roles Shane held, being a husband and father were among his greatest joys. He deeply loved his wife, Rebecca Gray, and was completely devoted to his children, Christian, Kirsten and Shannon. Later, when he became “Papa,” Shane found another calling in loving his grandchildren with his whole heart. His family was the center of his world. Shane gave his heart to Jesus as a young man. One of the most precious moments of his life came on August 2, 2026, when he had the blessing of watching all three of his grandchildren be baptized. Seeing his grandchildren publicly profess their faith touched Shane deeply. That same day, surrounded by the family he loved so much, Shane rededicated his own life to Jesus Christ, renewing his commitment to walk with the Lord. Shane loved to fish and was an incredible cook. He especially loved cooking on the grill, and anyone lucky enough to eat one of Shane’s steaks knew they were simply the best. Cooking was another way Shane showed his love—bringing people together around good food, laughter and family. Christmas was his favorite holiday because it brought together the people he loved most. For Shane, there was no greater blessing than having his family together. Shane had a tremendous heart for animals, and his dogs were truly part of his family. He leaves behind his three beloved dogs, Ares, Freya and Apollo, who held a very special place in his heart. Perhaps one of the greatest examples of who Shane was could be found in the way he ended every conversation. Whether he was talking to someone in person or on the phone, he never wanted a conversation to end without saying: “I love you.” He made sure the people in his life knew they were loved—completely, deeply and unconditionally. Shane leaves behind a legacy of love that will be carried on by his beloved wife, Rebecca Gray; his son, Christian Crenshaw and wife Isabel; his daughters, Kirsten Gray and Shannon Gray; his grandchildren, Anthony Soto, Ariana Crenshaw and Allison Crenshaw; his sisters, Sandy Lindsey and husband Richard, Teresa Altum and husband Danny, Regina Howard, and LeChrista Harrison and husband Michael; his brother, Joshua Gray and wife Daisy; his cousin who became as close as a brother, Glenn Austin and step-mother, Barbara Gray. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, extended family members and a host of friends whose lives were forever changed by knowing and loving their Superman, Michael Shane. Although his family will miss his voice, his stories, his laughter and hearing him say, “Cool-Cool - Dig it- Dig it!”, most of all they will miss hearing the words he never failed to say: “I love you.” Those words—and the love behind them—will remain with his family forever. A celebration of Michael Shane’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Max Slayton Funeral Chapel, where family and friends are invited to gather, celebrate Shane’s life and share the many memories of a man who loved with his whole heart. A reception will follow the service at the Max Slayton Reflections Venue next door to the funeral home.
